Rep. Sanchez Reports Out Three Border Bills


July 22, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – Today, the Subcommittee on Border, Maritime and Global Counterterrorism of the House Committee on Homeland Security passed three bills in subcommittee markup. The measures include:

H.R. 1517; To allow certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees who serve under an overseas limited appointment for at least 2 years, and whose service is rated fully successful or higher throughout that time, to be converted to a permanent appointment in the competitive service.

H.R. 1726; "The Border Security Search Accountability Act of 2009”; To require the Secretary of Homeland Security to issue a rule with respect to border security searches of electronic devices, and for other purposes.

H.R. 3239; To require the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Secretary of State, to submit a report on the effects of the Merida Initiative on the border security of the United States, and for other purposes.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Subcommittee, released the following statement:

“Today, our Subcommittee considered several homeland security initiatives that will make positive changes to the Department of Homeland Security and help assert the Committee’s primary jurisdiction over DHS. I am pleased that all three bills passed with broad bipartisan support, and look forward to working with my colleagues when they are considered by the full Committee.”
