Friday, October 16, 2009

October 16, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – Today, the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) component unveiled the long-awaited list of jurisdictions that will continue to participate in the controversial 287(g) program under revamped and uniform program guidelines. The 287(g) program permits state and local officials to enforce federal immigration law. Under the new guidelines, ICE has entered into revised and standardized agreements with 55 local law enforcement agencies. Six jurisdictions have withdrawn from the program.

Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement following the announcement from the Department of Homeland Security:

“Today's announcement was an important step in ICE's ongoing efforts to improve the effectiveness of the 287(g) program. I commend ICE for its commitment to reformulating the 287(g) program to provide safeguards for civil rights while ensuring that serious offenders are removed from our communities. I look forward to our continued collaboration in implementing effective programs that will keep our nation safe.”
